Northern California HMAs

Many of the Northern California HMA's administered by California lie partially or entirely in Nevada. They are better understood, in terms of their historical origins and herd qualities, when considered with the Nevada herds whose borders they share. This map shows the relationships between these Herd Management Areas.

Of the HMA's shown here, California manages Fox Hog, High Rock, Nut Mountain, Wall Canyon, and Massacre Lakes on this map. Nevada administers the others.

Buckhorn, Coppersmith, and Twin Peaks also lie partially in Nevada, but they are located just Southwest of this map.

CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA HMA's

Central and Southern California have fewer BLM & USFS Wild Horse & Burro Management Areas than are found in the North. Most are small and many are just for burros.

They include:

USFS - BIG BEAR - Burros
USFS - BLACK MOUNTAIN - Burros
USFS - SALINE VALLEY - Burros
CA0654 - CENTENNIAL- horses and burros
CA0681 - CHICAGO VALLEY -
USFS - MONTGOMERY PASS - This is a fascinating HMA, in that it is almost never gathered, because mountain lions and the harsh high elevation desert climate combine to keep the population fairly stable. The Montgomery Pass mustangs are the descendants of Spanish horses who escaped their wranglers, while being herded in large groups to buyers in Utah. If you wish to see and learn about these horses, Dr. Craig London of Rock Creek Pack Station leads interpretive rides to the area.
