The guys and Hank (on Cathy's horse) practicing the drill team entrance.
    Cindy Lawrence writes:

Hank Curry is the head trainer at Warm Springs.  Now, if all Hank had to do was gentle Mustangs, he could probably mark the calendar...."X" number of days to halter the horse, "x" number of days before you saddle the horse, and "X' number of days before you are in saddle...and the rest of the time is just working with training the horse...

But, Hank has to  throw a "HUGE monkey wrench" into that formula: guys who have never been on a horse.  And not just young men who have no fear and are eager to get on and go...

These men vary in age from young 20's to 40+

The "childhood/past history" that lead to these men to being in prison is so diverse, we can't even lump them into a group.

And you men out there know that sometimes it can be hard to take direction from another man. Once the guys are in the program for a while, they grow to really, really respect Hank....

But Hank sure has a tough job training men to train horses....He is awesome at it.

You are probably asking why I went into all this stuff about Hank....Because I have a horse story to share, but it takes an introduction..
Hank provides the guys with many, many DVD's for them to watch before they get on a horse...these DVD's are from a variety of trainers so the guys can see what works for them.  Hank is always there to offer advice, but he tends to let the guys work through problems if they are not a danger to themselves or the horses.  One gentleman was being really heavy handed with a horse's mouth, and Hank had taken all he could from this person....He walked over, took off the headstall and said, "now work with the horse".....Well, it sounds bizarre, but this horse/rider are doing so well....Cathy took these pictures today of the horse after the rider took off the headstall....    The horse is "stick"
Here Stick follows the men around like a dog

Please don't try this at home...

    Look ma, no hands!
Cathy couldn't capture the spins, stops etc with pictures, but this horse is doing sooooo well.  He had a headstall on when Cathy arrived, and Hank had him take the headstall off and show how well the horse was doing..
    More drill team practicing.

The guys work so hard with these horses, and are SO proud of what they have done.  They have never done a drill team type event...This is really foreign to them....but they love what they are doing and want to show off their horses abilities.

If you go to the auction, please take a moment to praise the men, and show them your appreciation for all their hard work.  This may be one of the first times that the guys have done something good for others...These men bond with the horses in the 120 days they work with them, and find it hard to give them up.   They have to learn to find that 'soft" spot in themselves to be effective with horses.  They may have bullied their ways through live, but being a bully with a horse will NOT work.

We like to say this program gentles Men and Mustangs!

MORE PRISON-TRAINED HORSE "GRADUATES"

Bart Lawrence of Reno, NV, riding the Carson City prison-trained horse he adopted last spring.

This gorgeous Palomino Mustang was shown at the Western States Wild Horse and Burro expo in 2004, less than 2 months after being adopted from the BLM's Carson City (Warm Springs) Prison Wild Horse Training Program.
This horse is Spyder (aka Spiderman), who I bought from the auction at the 2003 Western States Wild Horse and Burro Expo. He was trained by inmates. He took second place in the hunter hack class at the Bishop mustang show. He was first place halter gelding in his age group. In his usual life he is learning and showing dressage. -  Marcia Meurs
