This website is owned and created by Nancy Kerson, a private citizen - I am not the BLM or any other branch of government!

Information about BLM adoptions is offered as a service, to help mustangs find homes and to promote public appreciation of wild horses and burros.

Please direct adoption questions to the BLM, not to me.

And I sure as heck am not a Mustang car dealership!

I have NO horses or burros for sale and am not interested in buying or listing or otherwise promoting your sale animals!

OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN
WILD HORSE GENTLING:

HOW TO READ A BLM HORSE OR BURRO'S BRAND

Mustangs & Burros are freeze branded on the left neck by the BLM after they are captured.  Details such as age and registration number can be deciphered from the brand.  Each brand is unique, so each animal can be identified positively if you can read the brand.

This bay gelding is a 1991 model from Nevada.
1991 mustang with a freeze brand on the left side of his neck

1998 gathered horse with a Wyoming registration number.

dun mustang brand
some brands are a little hard to read, but the brand looks like 1994 on this buckskin gelding
black mustang brand
1994 black mustang mare from Nevada

The giant "U" indicates Sale Authority. This is a horse sold under the 2005 Burns Rider, which mandates BLM to offer for sale those horses who are either over 10 years old, or younger horses who have failed to be adopted after 3 attempts (easy to do in this economy).

The registration numbers for mustang brands fall into these number ranges for the state where the horse was gathered.
Arizona            80,001 - 160,000    (08-16)
California        160,001 - 240,000    (16-24)
Colorado         240,001 - 320,000    (24-32)
Idaho             320,001 - 400,000    (32-40)
Montana         400,000 - 480,000    (40-48)
Nevada           480,001 - 640,000    (48-64)
New Mexico     640,001 - 720,000    (64-72)
Oregon                  0     - 80,000    (00-08)
Utah              720,001 - 800,000    (72-80)
Wyoming        800,001 - 880,000    (80-88)
Eastern States 880,001 - 880,100

CAN YOU READ THESE BRANDS? Hold your cursor over the picture for the answer (assuming I read them right)

born 1996; Location: 21 (California) Necktag: 0481
It appears to say "31" which would be Colorado. But a BLM agent determined it was actually "21" (California) and all the other info in the database matched the horse. Also, since the horse was located in California, it seemed most likely that it was a California mustang rather than Colorado.
2000; 215 ?? Born in 2000 in California (21); necktag unreadable from the photo

1991; 54 (NV) 3813

2005; 55 (NV) 0365 (the "548" tag must have been for something else)

This is my horse and I know he was born in 2000 in Nevada, and his necktag was 2564, but his brand is definitely hard to see!
