This website is owned and created by Nancy Kerson, a private citizen. Information about BLM adoptions is offered as a service, to help mustangs find homes.

Please direct adoption questions to the BLM, not to me.

And we sure as heck are not a Mustang car dealership!

THE OVERO GROUP OF PAINT-PINTO PATTERNS

The OVERO group of pinto/paint patterns includes three distinct genetic agents (although the visual effects are not always so distinct, and often a horse may carry more than one pattern, hence they are all lumped together as "Overo") - basically if it isn't Tobiano, it's Overo, but the underlying genetics are variable.  Click a link to learn more:

 FRAME

Both The University of California at Davis and Animal Genetics, Inc. of Florida can test for the presence of Tobiano, Red, Frame, Creme, Silver, Sabino1, and Agouti (Bay). The test for Tobiano can determine whether or not a horse is homozygous of heterozygous (good to know if you are trying to breed for Tobiano).

You can download forms for these tests from their website-- follow
the links from http://www.vgl.ucdavis.edu

OR, from the Animal Genetics website

Mustangs with both Tovero  characteristics
TOVERO

has both Tobiano and Overo Characteristics, with a preponderance of white.

The American Paint Horse Association defines Tovero as:

Tovero

  • Dark pigmentation around the ears, which may expand to cover the forehead and/or eyes.
  • One or both eyes blue.
  • Dark pigmentation around the mouth, which may extend up the sides of the face and form spots.
  • Chest spot(s) in varying sizes. These may also extend up the neck.
  • Flank spot(s) ranging in size. These are often accompanied by smaller spots that extend forward across the barrel, and up over the loin.
  • Spots, varying in size, at the base of the tail.
    (from www.apha.com/breed/tovero.html)

Other places Tovero is defined variously as  "Tob-overo (tovero) horses have the characteristics of both the tobiano and overo horses" (from www.palouse.net/Paint/tovero.htm )

or

"The most common factor is a bald or extended face white more than 'normal' along with a tobiano pattern" with three types of tovero: Frame Overo + Tobiano, Sabino + Tobiano, and Spashed White + Tobiano (from http://www.geocities.com/Baja/Outback/2936/Tovero.html)
