Curly Mustangs -
Curlies in summer often shed their manes and tails

Curly is a coat quality, not a color, but it is a genetic phenomenon that people often inquire about. So lacking a more specific place to put it, I put it here.
Genetically, Curlies are the result of a naturally occuring genetic mutation, which is identical to the "Rex" gene in rabbits, or the familiar Poodle coat in dogs. The resulting coat is curly and hypo-allergenic. Domestic breeds, with the exception of the Bashkir Curly of Russia, cull it out of their genepools so it mainly exists within non-domesticated horses.
Curly horses - which DNA testing has shown to be unrelated to the Bashkirs - occur in some American Mustang herds, and they have an avid following, similar to the Kiger's.
