To be successful with your horse, you must learn basic horsemanship skills. Remember, every time you handle your horse, you are teaching him/her SOMETHING. After your horse is on its way to being gentled, it's time to start Groundwork training. Good ground manners and ground skills make the horse pleasant and safe to handle on a daily basis, and also provides the foundation for saddle work when that time comes. A good progression to follow when training new things is: 1. Start in the Round Pen or similar fairly large but enclosed space, at liberty or on a lead line. 2. Once your horse is under saddle, do the same maneuvers from the horse's back. | |
