This website is owned and created by Nancy Kerson, a private citizen - I am not the givernment

Information about BLM adoptions is offered as a service, to help mustangs find homes and to promote public appreciation of wild horses and burros.

Please direct adoption questions to the BLM, not to me.

And I sure as heck am not a Mustang car dealership!

I have NO horses or burros for sale and not interested in buying or listing your sale animals!

AFTER GENTLING, TRAINING BEGINS:
GROUND WORK

After your horse is on its way to being gentled, it's time to start Groundwork training. Good ground manners and ground skills make the horse pleasant and safe to handle on a daily basis, and also provides the foundation for saddle work when that time comes.

A good progression to follow when training new things is:

1. Start in the Round Pen or similar fairly large but enclosed space, at liberty or on a long line.

2. Progress to doing the same maneuver in-hand with a regular lead rope.

3. Once your horse is under saddle, do the same maneuvers from the horse's back.

Here are some basic ground skills that are good to teach your horse, and which can translate to maneuvers you will need when you begin riding your horse:

To be successful with your horse, you must learn basic horsemanship skills.

We took our first mustangs through Jerry Tindell's "6 Steps" program. One weekend a month for 6 months, we met with our group, and learned Round Penning, Basic Ground Skills, Ground Work with Challenges, First Ride, Riding with Challenges, and Trailer Loading. I strongly recommend this course, or something similar, should it be available to you.
